Poste Italiane tracking: numbers, statuses and pickup

7 min read

Peek is an independent tracker, not Poste Italiane. It shows what Poste Italiane’s own tracking publishes.

Poste Italiane is the Italian post, based in Rome, and it delivers parcels from Italian shops and from abroad. Track one with "Cerca Spedizioni" on poste.it, in the Poste Italiane app or by pasting the code in the box above. The code is on the sender's receipt; for an online order, the shop gives it to you.

Poste Italiane tracking number: where it is and what it looks like

Poste calls it the "codice spedizione". It sits under the barcode on the receipt or waybill; type it without spaces or dashes. Buying online, look in the shop's shipping email or order page. If the sender switched them on, Poste's Scegli Tu email or SMS carries the expected delivery day and a link.

Codes come in several shapes. These are invented:

Shape (invented)What it is
RA12345678901RA and 11 digits.
3UW00000000001UW or 3UW and 10 letters or digits.
2IMA12345678902IMA and 10 digits.
5PA12345678905P and 11 letters or digits.
123456A123456Digits with a letter inside: SDA-style codes.
RR123456785ITAn international postal number.

Many shapes are shared. A 5P code made only of digits can also be a La Poste (Colissimo) number, and plain 12- or 13-digit codes fit many carriers, so check which carrier the shop's email names. For a parcel posted abroad, poste.it shows tracking only once Poste Italiane handles it in Italy.

What Poste Italiane's tracking statuses mean

Poste's tracking and its status legend exist only in Italian: poste.it shows a short label and a sentence per scan, and Peek shows the sentences as Poste writes them.

Poste's wordingWhat it means for you
Presa in caricoPoste has accepted the parcel.
In attesa di sdoganamentoCustoms is checking it. You may be asked for documents.
completata la fase di verifica per lo svincolo…Customs checks are done.
In transitoOn its way between Poste's centres.
In consegnaHanded to the person who delivers it.
consegna non andata a buon fine…The delivery failed, for example because the address was wrong or incomplete.
disponibile per il ritiro dal giorno lavorativo successivo alla data indicataWaiting at a post office or Punto Poste, from the next working day.
la spedizione è stata consegnataDelivered.
sono in corso delle verifiche sulla spedizione. contatta assistenzaPoste is checking the parcel and asks you to contact customer service.
in restituzione al mittente…On its way back to the sender.
Tracciatura non disponibileToo new to show yet, or too old: parcel tracking ends after 2 months.

Some of these mislead. In consegna can stay on screen after delivery, or while the parcel already waits at a post office or Punto Poste. After a failed attempt, the parcel goes back to In transito, and stops on the way may look like a detour. Any expected date is, in Poste's words, only indicative.

Poste Italiane missed delivery, giacenza and Punto Poste

Poste makes two attempts at home. After the first, the postman leaves a notice (avviso) and you do nothing: the second attempt follows, for shop parcels the next working day. After the second, the parcel is held ("in giacenza") at the post office named on the notice.

The notice or SMS gives the last day; Poste's pages give between 3 working days (locker) and 10 (post office), depending on the service. Holding is free, and an uncollected parcel goes back to the sender.

At the post office, you can book a time with the "Prenota" button in Cerca Spedizioni or on 06 4526 4526. Lost the notice? Customer service can send a duplicate. Someone picking up for you needs a specific delegation, their ID and a copy of yours.

Punto Poste means shops such as tobacconists and bars, plus touchscreen lockers. You choose one at the shop's checkout and pick up with the PIN Poste sends by SMS or email.

Changing a delivery. If the sender activated Scegli Tu, its link lets you, once per parcel, pick another day, another address in Italy, a pickup point, a neighbour, a safe place or a holiday hold.

From outside the EU, import charges are paid on delivery or at a post office. Poste's clearance fee for a commercial item is €3.00 up to €22, €7.00 up to €1,000 and €21.00 above, and since 1 July 2026, says Italy's customs agency (ADM), a temporary flat duty of €3 per item applies. See parcels held at customs.

Poste Italiane lost, late or damaged parcel

Poste's pages say nothing about tracking that stops moving. Start with the shop, which holds the contract with Poste; see tracking that isn't updating.

Sender and recipient may both complain, but compensation goes to the sender unless it formally waives it to you, so for an online order the shop is the quicker route. For a parcel from abroad, Poste advises the sender to contact the post of the country it left from. Point out damage at delivery: accept the parcel with a "consegna cautelare" form, or refuse it.

Deadlines depend on the sender's service: for Crono and Poste Delivery Business, 20 calendar days after Poste collected it from the sender; for Poste Delivery Standard, from the 6th working day after posting, up to 3 months. File online with the parcel complaint form, by certified email (PEC) with Poste's complaint letter, by registered letter to Casella Postale 160, 00144 Roma, or at a post office. Poste's charter promises an answer within 45 days, then conciliation, then the regulator, AGCOM. A parcel marked delivered but not received goes the same way: Poste gives no other procedure.

Tracking Poste Italiane parcels with Peek

Peek names Poste Italiane at once for RA, 1UW, 3UW, 2IMA and 5P codes. A digits-only 5P code that also fits La Poste is asked of both, Poste Italiane first for readers in Italy; SDA-style codes are asked of Poste Italiane alone. Other codes, such as 12 digits, need "Change". A poste.it link ending in #/risultati-spedizioni/ and the code works too. Peek can't ask Poste Italiane about international postal numbers ending in IT, even inside a poste.it link: it follows those through universal tracking services instead.

Peek checks every 10 minutes, every 2 once the parcel is out for delivery, and can notify you when it moves. It shows the status, the newest 20 scans with their post office or town on a map, the expected delivery day and the service name, in Poste's Italian wording with exact times. It drops the sender, recipient, address, signature, weight, size and pickup office. An unknown code and one too old to track both show as not found, and Peek doesn't follow parcels to another carrier.
