Poșta Română tracking: numbers, statuses and customs

10 min read

Peek is an independent tracker, not Poșta Română. It shows what Poșta Română’s own tracking publishes.

Poșta Română (Compania Națională Poșta Română, CNPR) provides Romania's universal postal service and delivers to every town and village in the country. Track an item on its Track & Trace page, or paste the number in the box above. Each post gives information only for its own part of the journey, so Poșta Română's tracker covers Romania only: a parcel from a shop abroad shows on the sending post's tracker first, and on Poșta Română's once it reaches Romania. Can't find your number? See how to find a tracking number.

Poșta Română tracking number: what it looks like

Poșta Română's tracking code has 13 characters: two letters, nine digits and two letters, with no spaces. Its own codes end in RO. It's the international postal format, so another post's number looks the same with that country's code at the end. The last of the nine digits is a check digit. With invented digits:

Shape (invented)What it is
CP000000005ROAn item Poșta Română numbered, within Romania or going abroad. The two letters in front vary with the service; RO at the end is what counts.
RR000000005CNEnds in other letters, here CN: another country's post numbered it, here China Post. A parcel coming to Romania from abroad usually has such a number.

Poșta Română tracks registered and insured items, parcels, cash-on-delivery parcels, EMS and registered printed papers. A standard letter can't be tracked.

Poșta Română tracking statuses explained

Peek reads each step in Romanian, usually without accents, with the office or hub that scanned the item. The lines Peek knows, roughly in order:

Poșta Română saysWhat it means for you
Primit de la expeditorReceived from the sender: Poșta Română has the item.
In prelucrareBeing processed at the place named: a post office, a regional hub or the international exchange office in Bucharest.
In transportIt has left the place named and is on its way.
Sosit in RomaniaIt has arrived in Romania from abroad, at the international exchange office.
Expediat din RomaniaIt has been sent abroad. Poșta Română's tracking ends here.
Programat pentru predare incepand cu aceasta dataIt's ready to be handed over from this date at the post office named. Collect it there.
Predat la destinatarHanded to the recipient: delivered.
Returnat catre expeditorIt's going back to the sender.

Peek files these under its own stages, such as "In transit" or "Ready for pickup", and also reads them written with accents. A delivery after Returnat catre expeditor is the item reaching its sender, so Peek shows "Returned to sender". Peek reads any other line by its wording, with the rules it uses for every carrier, and shows one it doesn't know as written, without a stage. More in what tracking statuses mean.

Receiving a Poșta Română parcel in Romania

Delivery times. Poșta Română's general terms set a standard of Z+5 for delivering a parcel of up to 20 kg sent from abroad to an address in Romania: five days, counted from when it enters Poșta Română's network. For a parcel from outside the EU, the time customs needs comes on top. See delivery times.

Collecting it. When the parcel waits for you at a post office, the tracker shows Programat pentru predare incepand cu aceasta data with that office. Poșta Română keeps it there for at least 5 calendar days from the day it notifies you. If it's at a post office with customs assistance, contact that office before you go. See missed a delivery and uncollected parcels.

Customs on parcels from outside the EU. Romania is in the EU, so a parcel from China, the UK or the US goes through customs, and every such parcel with goods needs an electronic customs declaration, gifts included. Poșta Română declares your online orders of up to €150 for you, as your representative, and collects VAT at the standard 21% on them, unless the seller collected it through IOSS and the data sent ahead with the parcel shows it. Since 1 July 2026, goods bought online from outside the EU in orders up to €150 carry a €3 EU customs duty per item, as Poșta Română's own customs page says too. Since 1 November 2026, a €2 Union handling fee per item applies as well, whatever the value. An item is the goods in a parcel that share a tariff classification, description and, where required, origin.

Poșta Română charges a customs presentation fee of 18.00 lei for these low-value parcels, gifts and IOSS parcels included. If customs selects the parcel for a risk check, you get a notice asking for documents, and the customs brokerage fee is 35.00 lei per parcel instead. You need an EORI number for customs formalities, even as a private person receiving a gift that needs them. You pay import taxes in cash, or by card at post offices with customs assistance that have a card terminal. More in parcels held at customs.

Delays and returns at customs. Poșta Română processes these parcels in Bucharest, using electronic data the sending post sends ahead. Missing or incomplete data delays a parcel; without it or proper CN22/CN23 customs forms, the parcel goes back to the sender. Ordered on AliExpress, Temu or Shein? See tracking from China.

Poșta Română items sent abroad

Poșta Română's tracker follows an item until it leaves Romania, and shows nothing while it crosses other countries. After Expediat din Romania, use the destination country's postal tracker with the same RO number, such as USPS, Royal Mail, An Post, Canada Post, Australia Post, Poste Italiane or Correos.

Poșta Română tracking not updating, lost or returned

No new step. The tracker covers Romania only: an item going abroad stops at Expediat din Romania, and one coming in shows nothing until it reaches Romania. A parcel from outside the EU can also wait at customs. See why tracking stops updating.

Lost, late or damaged. The sender or the recipient can complain, in the ways listed under contact below, within 6 months of posting; for an international item the 6 months start the day after posting, and for international Express items such as EMS the limit is 1 to 4 months. Have the tracking number and the date posted ready. Poșta Română answers within 3 months, compensation included. You can also ask for compensation for a lost or damaged registered item at any post office, with the postage receipt; unregistered mail isn't covered. For international items, compensation is up to 30 SDR for registered documents, and up to 40 SDR per parcel plus 4.5 SDR per kg for standard parcels; an insured item is covered up to its declared value. Bought online? Tell the shop too: see lost parcels and damaged parcels.

Delivered but not received. Complain as above: the international form lists an undelivered item and missing contents among its reasons. See delivered but not received.

Returned. Returnat catre expeditor means the item is going back to its sender. Peek shows it as "Returned to sender": see returned to sender.

Track a Poșta Română parcel with Peek

Every post uses the same 13-character shape, so Peek doesn't name Poșta Română from an RO number alone. Paste it all the same: Peek follows more than 3,500 carriers. It shows "Checking tracking services…" while it asks the carriers that track such numbers, Poșta Română first, and shows "Poșta Română has this parcel." if Poșta Română knows it. If not yet, Peek files it as an unknown postal carrier and asks tracking services, and also the post of the destination country when one of them names it; in the parcel's first 30 days it asks Poșta Română again, and moves the parcel there once Poșta Română shows it moving. You can also pick Poșta Română with "Change". With a wrong check digit, Peek says "This number’s check digit doesn’t add up.": check the number, or choose "Track it as typed". A link to Poșta Română's tracker works too: Peek takes the number from it. Filed under Poșta Română, a parcel shows "Waiting for the carrier" until its first scan.

Peek reads Poșta Română's own tracking. It shows each step in Poșta Română's Romanian wording with the place it names, and the post office where your parcel waits as the "Pickup point", or as "Picked up at" once you've collected it. Peek reads every scan on Romanian time, as the tracker shows only scans in Romania. It leaves out the origin, the departure date and the office's opening hours. The tracker gives no expected delivery date, weight or names, so Peek shows none. "Open the Poșta Română website" on the parcel's page opens the number on Poșta Română's tracker. Pick Poșta Română for a number it can't look up, and Peek shows "doesn’t issue numbers like this one".

When you track an RO number from outside Romania, Peek also asks your country's post with the same number: USPS from the US, Royal Mail from the UK (Parcelforce for a number starting with E), An Post from Ireland, Canada Post, Australia Post, NZ Post, DHL from Germany, La Poste from France, Israel Post from Israel, and a carrier in every other EU country, Switzerland and Norway. It switches to that post once it shows fresh scans, and keeps Poșta Română's history. From Romania, Peek asks no other post, as Poșta Română's tracking doesn't name the destination, so follow the destination post yourself; from Moldova, Turkey or the UAE, it knows none to ask. The other way round, when another post's tracking names Romania as the destination, or names none and you track from Romania, Peek asks Poșta Română with that post's number.

Peek checks every 10 minutes, and hourly after two days without news (12 hours while the parcel still shows "Label created" or "Received by carrier"). Alerts: "Every scan", "Important steps" or "Delivery only". Peek can't contact Poșta Română, your post or the shop for you.

Questions about Poșta Română tracking

How do I track a Poșta Română parcel?

Enter the 13-character code on Poșta Română's Track & Trace page, or paste it into Peek. For a parcel from abroad, use the number the sender or shop gave you: Poșta Română shows it once it's in Romania.

Why is my Poșta Română tracking not updating?

If the last step is Expediat din Romania, the item has left Romania, and Poșta Română's tracker follows items only inside the country: track it on the destination country's post with the same number. A parcel from outside the EU can also wait at customs.

How long does Poșta Română keep a parcel at the post office?

At least 5 calendar days from the day it notifies you. Collect it at the office the tracker names.

Do I pay customs on a parcel from outside the EU?

For online orders, yes. Orders up to €150 carry a €3 customs duty per item, and every online order the €2 Union handling fee per item, whatever its value. Poșta Română also collects 21% VAT unless the seller collected it through IOSS, and charges a customs presentation fee of 18.00 lei.

What is the Poșta Română customer service number?

021 9393, Monday to Friday, 8am to 8pm, or email suportclienti@ro.post. Poșta Română doesn't take complaints by phone.
