DHL Paket tracking: numbers, statuses and pickup help

7 min read

Peek is an independent tracker, not DHL Paket. It shows what DHL Paket’s own tracking publishes.

DHL Paket is the German parcel service of DHL Group, sold under the Deutsche Post and DHL brands. Track a parcel with its tracking number on dhl.de (in English or German), in the Post & DHL app or by pasting it in the box above. The number comes from the sender: shops usually put it in the shipping confirmation.

DHL Paket tracking number: where to find it and what it looks like

DHL calls it the Sendungsnummer: 10 to 39 letters and digits, depending on the product. You get it from the sender; it is not your order number, and without it even DHL's customer service can't look up a status.

The shapes you'll meet most (digits invented):

Shape (invented)What it is
JJD000123456789012345A label number: JJD and 18 digits.
00340434123456789012A 20-digit barcode number starting 00340434, 00340433 or 00340435.
CA123456785DEA postal number: C or L, another letter, nine digits and DE.
123456789016A 12-digit Identcode.

A new number can take up to 24 hours to appear. If DHL calls it invalid, check for typos; otherwise it may be a Päckchen (no tracking), a letter, an Express shipment, a parcel from abroad tracked by DHL eCommerce or another carrier's. A 10-digit waybill usually belongs to DHL Express.

What DHL Paket tracking statuses mean

dhl.de shows tracking in German or English. The English version mixes in some German events, such as Die Sendung wurde erfolgreich zugestellt. (delivered).

DHL's statusWhat it means for you
The instruction data for this shipment have been provided by the sender to DHL electronicallyThe sender has printed a label and sent DHL the data. DHL doesn't have the parcel yet.
The shipment was handed over to DHL.DHL has the parcel.
The shipment has been processed in the parcel centerSorted at a parcel centre on its way to your region.
The shipment will be transported to the destination country/destination area and, from there, handed over to the delivery organization.Leaving Germany for a delivery company abroad.
The shipment is being processed by customsCustoms in the destination country has it.
The shipment has been processed in the destination parcel centre. At the parcel centre that serves your area.
The shipment has been loaded into the delivery vehicleOut for delivery, usually delivered the same day.
The shipment has been deliveredDelivered to you, a neighbour, someone in your household or your letterbox.

The shipment has not been picked up and will be returned. The storage period ran out and it goes back.
The shipment is returning to senderOn its way back to the sender.

The shipment is in transit to DHL on a parcel from abroad means DHL doesn't have it yet; the next update can take days. A sorting line that stays put for hours or days is normal, but the destination parcel centre line shown several times means manual handling and a delay of 1 to 2 days.

Missed delivery, Packstation and pickup

If you're out, DHL may leave the parcel with a neighbour or someone in your household, and then tells you by card or email. Otherwise it goes to a nearby post office (Filiale), Paketshop or Packstation. Tracking shows the actual place, even if the card names another.

  • Post office or Paketshop: kept 7 working days (Saturdays included) from the day after the first attempt. Bring photo ID; the card isn't needed at a branch. Someone else can collect with your signed authorisation, the card and their own ID.
  • Packstation: 7 calendar days for a parcel addressed there, 9 after a missed delivery, never extended. Open it with the Post & DHL app's pickup code, or with the card after a missed delivery.
  • Second delivery: after a missed delivery you can book one, until 2 days before the storage period ends. It usually comes 2 working days later.

Before delivery, DHL lets you postpone it by up to six working days for free (Liefertag), name a safe place (Ablageort) or neighbour and, as a registered customer, redirect it to a Packstation or branch. The address itself can't be changed once the parcel is on its way.

DHL parcel not arrived, delayed or damaged

If tracking hasn't changed for under 5 working days, DHL asks you to keep watching. After that a tracing request (Nachforschung) can be filed, but talk to the sender first: the shop can usually sort it out faster. DHL's customer service sees the same tracking as you and can't speed a parcel up. See tracking not updating.

Marked delivered but nothing at the door? Check the "Delivered to" field for the neighbour or letterbox. If an unknown neighbour hasn't come forward after two days, contact customer service. Also look for Rücksendung eingeleitet: the parcel may have gone back to the sender, and a return can't be stopped once it has started. More in delivered but not received.

Report damage or missing contents within 7 days of delivery: fill in DHL's damage form, then book a free collection on 0228 4333112 or hand the whole parcel in at a post office. DHL contacts the sender.

Customs. For parcels from outside the EU, Deutsche Post pays the import charges and collects them from you on delivery or at the branch, plus a €7.50 fee. Since 1 July 2026 online orders up to €150 pay a flat €3 duty per type of goods. See what customs charges.

Tracking DHL Paket with Peek

Peek names DHL at once from a JJD label number with 18 digits, a valid 0034043… barcode number or a valid C…DE / L…DE number. A 12-digit Identcode or 10-digit number fits several carriers and Peek can't ask DHL about it, so pick "DHL" with "Change", which also fixes a parcel filed under the wrong DHL network. Links from dhl.de, deutschepost.de and nolp.dhl.de work too.

Peek reads dhl.de's tracking in English, falling back to a browser on its server when DHL refuses. If DHL wants a postcode or says the number belongs to another DHL service, tracking services fill in. Peek checks every 10 minutes, every 2 minutes once out for delivery, and can notify you at every scan, at important steps or on delivery day only.

It shows the status, each scan with its place on a map at DHL's exact time, the expected delivery day (no time window) and the destination country, with DHL's wordings as written. It drops your name, address and signature and shows no Packstation or branch address. When a scan abroad links a local post's tracking (Swiss Post, for example), Peek can follow the parcel there. It can't redirect a parcel or book a Liefertag.
