Austrian Post tracking: numbers, statuses and pickup

7 min read

Peek is an independent tracker, not Austrian Post. It shows what Austrian Post’s own tracking publishes.

Austrian Post (Österreichische Post AG, in Vienna) is Austria's postal company. Track a parcel on post.at, which has an English version, in the Post App, or paste the number in the box above. The number comes from the shop that sent the parcel, from Austrian Post's e-notification, or from the yellow notice left after a missed delivery.

Austrian Post tracking number format and where to find it

Austrian Post's help pages give two shapes for an item number (digits invented here):

ShapeWhat it is
1012345678901234567890Austrian Post's own number: 22 digits starting 10.
RR123456785ATAn international postal number: two letters, nine digits, two letters. Ending in AT, it is Austrian Post's.

Where it turns up. In the shop's shipping email; in Austrian Post's e-notification (email or Post App), if you have a free Post Account and the sender sent its shipping data; and on the yellow notice after a missed delivery.

The 6-digit CRN code on a customs sticker is not the tracking number.

Lookalikes. Many carriers use 22 digits. 0123450123451234567890 has TIPSA's shape and 0012340012345678901234 belongs to CTT Express; RR123456785DE is a postal number from another country's post. If post.at doesn't know your number, check which carrier the shop named.

Austrian Post tracking statuses explained

post.at shows its tracking in German and, through the EN switch, in English. Each row gives the English wording, then the German one.

Austrian Post's statusWhat it means for you
Sender is preparing the shipment for shipping, Versender*in bereitet die Sendung für den Versand vorThe shop has announced the parcel. Austrian Post doesn't have it yet.
Item accepted, Zum Transport erhaltenAustrian Post has received the parcel for transport.
Shipment being processed at the logistics center, Sendung im Logistikzentrum in BearbeitungBeing sorted in a logistics centre.
Item in distribution, Sendung in VerteilungIn Austria and due in the next working days.
Delay due to incorrect distribution, Verzögerung wegen FehlverteilungSorted to the wrong place: a slight delay, nothing for you to do.
Shipment out for delivery, Sendung in ZustellungExpected to arrive today.
Item could not be delivered - consignee notified, Empfänger nicht angetroffen - brieflich benachrichtigtNobody was in. A notice is in your letterbox.
Item ready for pick-up, Sendung abholbereitWaiting for you until the date on the notice.
Item arrived in Austrian Post pick-up box, Sendung in Post Empfangsbox eingelangtIn the parcel box at your building.
Item handed over to delivery partner, Übergabe an ZustellpartnerAnother company makes the delivery.
Shipment delivered, Sendung wurde zugestelltDelivered.
Return/addressing error, Rücksendung/AdressierungsfehlerThe address is wrong or incomplete, so the parcel goes back to the sender.

The help pages use summary statuses such as Item in distribution, while history lines read like Shipment being processed at the logistics center, so you won't see every row. Electronic order information was provided by the sender means only a label exists, and a shop's "on its way" email does not mean the parcel was handed over. If it doesn't change within a few working days, ask the sender. For a parcel from abroad, Item received means the carrier in the sending country has it.

Austrian Post parcel pickup, lockers and missed deliveries

Delivery times. Austrian Post says parcels within Austria are usually delivered within two business days, and Post Express usually by 13:00 the next working day.

Missed delivery. The courier leaves a yellow notice (Gelber Zettel) in your letterbox saying where to pick up the parcel and the last day to do so. The pickup period starts the next day and runs until the third following Monday, so at least 14 days. Online shops may set a shorter period of 5 business days.

Where it waits. At a post office branch during opening hours, or in a Poststation, a parcel locker open 24/7 that needs the code from your notice. Austrian Post has over 1,500, in branches, residential areas and supermarkets.

Picking up. Bring photo ID and the tracking number; you can pick up at a branch even without the notice. Someone else can pick up with your yellow notice. The free e-notification also works for pickup and can be forwarded to someone else.

Changing the delivery. In your Post Account ("Empfangsoptionen") or the Post App you can redirect parcels free of charge, once or permanently: to a branch, a Post Partner, a Hermes PaketShop, a Poststation, a chosen spot at home or a chosen neighbour. A permanent setting takes effect after 3 working days at the earliest.

Post Empfangsbox. The courier leaves a notice whose barcode opens your building's parcel box once only, so take the parcel out at once.

Customs. Austrian Post declares parcels from outside the EU and collects import VAT, duty and its own import fee on delivery or at the branch. Since 1 July 2026 goods under €150 pay a flat €3 duty. More in parcels held at customs.

Austrian Post parcel late, lost or damaged

The sender is Austrian Post's customer, so the sender is your first contact for problems.

No update. Delays don't automatically mean a loss. Austrian Post suggests a search once the status hasn't changed for more than 3 to 5 working days on a domestic parcel. See tracking not updating.

Delivered but not there. If the status says delivered or ready for pickup, check your letterbox, your drop-off place and your neighbours, then contact the sender. See delivered but not received.

Lost. Only the sender can start a search (Nachforschung), or for a parcel from abroad the sender or the sending country's carrier. If you paid online, ask the shop. The sender has 3 months for domestic parcels and 6 months for international ones; a search usually takes at least two weeks.

Damaged. Report it at the latest 7 days after delivery (Sundays and public holidays excluded), online in your Post Account or at a branch, with photos of the goods and the packaging. Keep everything until Austrian Post answers, and tell the sender: compensation usually goes to them.

Tracking Austrian Post parcels with Peek

Peek recognises an international number ending in AT with a valid check digit as Austrian Post at once. For 22 digits, shared with other carriers, Peek asks Austrian Post, USPS and Estafeta at once and names Austrian Post when only it knows the number; if several or none do, pick with "Change". A post.at link works only with an AT number inside.

Peek shows the status, the history with each facility on a map, the weight, the dimensions, the delivery time and an expected delivery (a day, a span of days or a time window) while the parcel is accepted, in distribution or out for delivery. It shows a parcel as ready for pickup, but not where, and no sender. Austrian Post's wordings appear in German, as its tracking gives them, so a delivered parcel shows Sendung wurde zugestellt.

Peek checks every 10 minutes, every 2 once out for delivery, and can notify you of every scan, important steps only or on delivery day only. After Übergabe an Zustellpartner, Peek does not follow the partner, and it never switches a parcel from another carrier over to Austrian Post.

Questions about Austrian Post tracking

Can I track Austrian Post in English?

Yes. post.at has English pages, and its tracking shows English wordings once you switch to EN.

Why does my Austrian Post tracking number not work?

The parcel may only be announced: until the sender hands it over, there's little to see. Otherwise check the digits, and whether the number belongs to another carrier, since many use 22 digits.

Does Austrian Post have a customer service email?

Not for recipients. Use the contact form, the chat on the tracking page or the hotline.
