GLS Italy tracking: numbers, statuses and missed deliveries
GLS Italy is the Italian arm of the GLS parcel group, a network of local depots (each called a Sede) run as franchises under GLS Italy S.p.A. Track a parcel on GLS's Track & Trace page, in the free GLS app or by pasting the number in the box above. The number comes from the sender, usually the shop, when the parcel leaves.
GLS Italy tracking number: where to find it
Look in the shop's shipping email or order page: the sender gives you the number when the parcel leaves. It's also printed under the barcode on the shipping document, and on the paper notice ("avviso di passaggio") the driver leaves after a missed attempt, with the phone and email of your local Sede. No number? Ask the sender, or see how to find a tracking number. GLS can't track a parcel by name or address.
GLS's form takes these codes:
| Shape (invented) | What it is |
|---|---|
AB123456789 | National shipment number: two letters and up to 9 digits. |
A1 123456789 | National shipment number with a letter and a digit, like GLS's own example. |
12345678901 | International shipment number: 11 digits, one per parcel. |
12345678 | Parcel ID (ID Collo): the digits under the ID Collo barcode, without the leading zeros and the final "GLS". |
A national shipment of several parcels needs only one number.
Eleven digits also fit PostLogistics and GLS in France, Germany and Switzerland, and twelve digits fit BRT, Mondial Relay and others. If the email names another GLS country, track it there.
What GLS Italy's tracking statuses mean
GLS Italy's tracking shows these English wordings at gls-group.com/IT/en (Italian at /IT/it), in the order a parcel usually meets them:
| GLS's status | What it means for you |
|---|---|
The shipment has been created by the sender, we are waiting for it to be entrusted to us for dispatch to its destination. | The sender booked it but hasn't handed it to GLS yet. |
Shipped from sending Depot. In transit. | First real scan: it has left the sender's depot. |
Shipment in transit. | Sorted at a hub between the two depots. |
The shipment has not yet arrived at the receiving GLS Depot. | Your local depot expected it and it isn't there yet. |
Arrived at final Depot. | At the depot that delivers to you. |
Delivery scheduled during the day. | Out for delivery today. |
Parcel not delivered as the consignee was absent, please book redelivery within 3 working days as per instructions provided by email or sms. | Nobody was in. Use the link in GLS's email or SMS. |
Not in delivery. Awaiting instructions by link included in received email or sms | Held at the depot until you book a redelivery through that link. |
Available for collection at GLS POINT. | Waiting at a GLS Point; the tracking doesn't say which. |
Delivered. | Delivered at the door or picked up at a GLS Point. |
GLS's FAQ lists more labels. AWAITING SENDER’S INSTRUCTIONS – SHIPMENT IN STORAGE means the parcel is held and the sender must arrange redelivery, so for an online order ask the shop. REFUSED and INCOMPLETE OR INCORRECT ADDRESS can only be released by the sender. SHIPMENT WAITING IN STORAGE means it waits at the depot for you to pick up with ID and the GLS number.
GLS delivery in Italy: missed parcels, GLS Points and giacenza
GLS delivers Monday to Friday, public holidays excluded, during the day (roughly 8.30 to 18.30). A set time or a Saturday only happens if the sender paid for it.
Missed delivery. The driver leaves a notice, and a second attempt follows the next working day. If the sender booked GLS's Flex Delivery, a link by email or SMS lets you pick a new date or a pickup point (a Sede or GLS Shop). If the sender's contract allows it, you can also choose a new address, a safe place or a neighbour. To change the address otherwise, ask the sender.
Giacenza (on hold). If the second attempt fails too, the parcel goes on hold and the sender has 10 working days to give instructions. GLS's service charter keeps held parcels 10 working days (8 for parcels from abroad), at no extra charge, then, without instructions, sends them back to the sender. To get it redelivered, contact whoever sent it.
GLS Points and lockers. You pick a GLS Shop when you order online and get an SMS or email when it arrives. GLS counts over 10,000 shops in Italy. You have 10 working days to pick up, with a reminder after 5; after that it goes back to the Sede. Lockers and Points are on GLS's Trova Sede e GLS Point locator.
Fermo Deposito. If the sender booked depot pickup, pick it up at the Sede by the 3rd working day with ID and the shipment number. Hours: Monday to Friday 8.30 to 13.00 and 14.30 to 18.30, Saturday 8.30 to 12.00.
GLS parcel late, lost or damaged
Tracking updates at each scan, and GLS says there can be a few days between updates across Italy or abroad. GLS's operational updates page lists current local slowdowns. Still stuck? Tell the sender or whoever paid for the shipment: they can open a complaint. GLS promises no binding delivery date and pays nothing for delay. See tracking that isn't updating.
Shown as delivered but not received? Tell the sender at once; only the payer can request the proof of delivery and then complain. More in delivered but not received.
Damaged packaging: refuse the parcel, or sign with a detailed written reservation for the driver. Without that, a claim for visible damage lapses. For damage found after opening, tell the sender quickly: they can claim within 8 calendar days of the day after delivery.
You can also complain yourself with the form attached to GLS's service charter, within 90 days of the shipment date, to [email protected]. GLS replies within 45 days. Then come conciliation and the regulator, AGCOM.

Tracking GLS Italy parcels with Peek
Peek asks GLS Italy about two letters and nine digits and says "GLS Italy has this parcel." when GLS knows it. For GLS's letter-and-digit form, pick GLS Italy with "Change". A gls-group.com or gls-group.eu tracking link with /IT/ in its path works too; gls-italy.com links don't. Peek asks GLS France, Germany and Switzerland about 11-digit international numbers, never GLS Italy; if GLS Germany knows yours, Peek asks for the delivery postcode.
GLS Italy's scan times carry no time zone, so Peek doesn't show GLS Italy's own scan list. It takes the dated history from universal tracking services, asks GLS Italy again every 6 hours and, if no service answers, shows GLS Italy's current status, dated when Peek saw it. Statuses keep GLS's English wording, and the weight shows.
It shows no expected delivery day, pickup point or sender, and drops your name, address and signature. A parcel forwarded or returned under a new number isn't followed, and old shipments come back as not found.
