NZ Post tracking: numbers, statuses and missed parcels
NZ Post is New Zealand's state-owned postal service, and its CourierPost courier services are tracked the same way. Track a parcel in the tracking tool on nzpost.co.nz, in the NZ Post app or by pasting the number in the box above. The number comes from the sender: the shop's shipping email or order page, or your PostShop receipt if you posted it yourself.
NZ Post tracking number: where to find it and what it looks like
Where to find it:
- Bought online: the shop's shipping confirmation or order page. If you can't find it, ask the sender to give it again.
- Posted at a PostShop with a tracked service: printed at the bottom of your receipt. The same PostShop may print a duplicate receipt within 90 days.
- Untracked services have no number and can't be tracked at all.
Type it without spaces or brackets. Invented examples of the shapes:
| Shape (example) | What it is |
|---|---|
RR123456785NZ | Postal number: 2 letters, 9 digits, NZ (13 characters). |
12345678901234567890 | Courier parcel number, 20 digits. |
1234567890123456ABC123NZ | Courier label: 16 digits, 3 letters, 3 digits, 2 letters (24 characters). |
Lookalikes: the "Missed my parcel" card carries a card number of CTC and 9 digits. It isn't the tracking number, so don't track with it. Two letters and 10 digits (AB1234567890) belong to Aramex New Zealand, not NZ Post.
What NZ Post tracking statuses mean
NZ Post's site and tracking are in English only. These are the statuses most parcels show, in order.
| NZ Post's status | What it means for you |
|---|---|
Tracking number allocated to parcel | The sender has made a label. NZ Post doesn't have the parcel yet. |
Collected from sender | A courier driver picked it up from the sender, or it was dropped at an NZ Post outlet. |
International arrival | A parcel from abroad has arrived in New Zealand. |
Held for clearance | Waiting for a border agency: it may need an MPI inspection or Customs charges. |
Processed at depot | Sorted at a depot on its way to you. |
Ready for courier | At your local depot, waiting for your courier driver. |
With courier for delivery | Out for delivery: NZ Post says it should arrive today. |
Delivered | Delivered, perhaps to a safe place or to someone at the address. |
Delayed | NZ Post knows it's late and will update you when it's on its way. |
Delivery attempted - refer to card | The driver couldn't deliver safely; a card tells you what to do. |
Handed over | After a missed delivery: it will be ready for collection soon. |
Ready to collect | Waiting for you at a collection location. |
Parcels dropped in a post box, at a store or with a Rural Delivery driver may skip Collected from sender.
Handed over is not delivered. It follows a missed delivery, when the parcel moves to the place on your card. Delivered can also mean left in a safe place, not handed to you.
For parcels from abroad, Import Duty and Tax Payable means NZ Customs says duty or GST is owed: NZ Post posts you an invoice and releases the parcel once you pay. Processing at international depot with a note about documents may mean you'll be contacted.
NZ Post card left: missed delivery and Collect my parcel
When a parcel needs a signature or there's nowhere safe to leave it, the driver leaves a "Missed my parcel" card. It shows when delivery was tried and what to do, which varies by region. From the next business day you can collect it at the place on the card with the card or tracking number and photo ID, or ask for redelivery to the same or a different address with NZ Post's Missed my parcel service. You have 10 days; after that it goes back to the sender.
Before delivery, you can:
- Redirect it in the tracking tool for a small fee, up to 75 km away, until it shows
Out for deliveryorHandover. - Leave my parcel: let the driver sign for you and leave a signature-required parcel in a safe place, once or for every parcel.
- Collect my parcel: a free address at one of 360+ locations, including NZ Post stores and Woolworths, for NZ Post parcels up to 15 kg and 50 x 40 x 30 cm. You get an email when it's ready and have 10 days to collect it with that email and photo ID.
NZ Post tracking not updating, delayed or delivered but not received
No tracking updates means the parcel needs more time or the number is wrong. See tracking that isn't updating.
For a delayed, missing or damaged parcel, NZ Post's parcel enquiry form starts with your tracking number. If you're the receiver, NZ Post asks you to raise it with the sender first. Its time limits for domestic parcels: 21 days from posting for non-delivery, 10 days from delivery for damage. When contents are missing, NZ Post's searches take up to 10 working days in New Zealand and up to 60 working days for international items.
Marked Delivered but not there? Check hidden spots, your reception or front desk and the delivery photo if there is one, and confirm the address with the sender. Then contact NZ Post with the number, address, a description of the item and the sender's details. If NZ Post can't find it, it may ask you to go to the sender for compensation. More in delivered but not received.
Damaged: photograph the items, packaging and barcode labels for the damaged parcel enquiry.
From abroad, any parcel can be inspected by NZ Customs and MPI. NZ Customs says goods bought from overseas websites for NZ$1000 or less pay no duty and the overseas seller collects the GST (tobacco and alcohol excepted). Once released, delivery takes 1 to 3 working days; NZ Post can't speed Customs up. More in parcels held at customs.

Tracking NZ Post parcels with Peek
Peek names NZ Post at once for postal numbers ending NZ and for 24-character courier labels. A 20-digit number is shared with USPS and others, so Peek asks NZ Post first and names it when it has the parcel; if it can't settle, pick NZ Post with "Change". Links from nzpost.co.nz with trackid= work too.
Peek reads NZ Post's own tracking and shows the status, each scan with its depot on a map and the time of delivery. Delivered appears in Peek's own words; the rest as NZ Post writes them. It drops the recipient, signatures and the delivery photo, shows no expected delivery date or collection location, and can't redirect a parcel or set Leave my parcel.
It checks every 10 minutes, every 2 minutes once the parcel is with the courier, and can notify you at every scan, at important steps or on delivery day only. When Aramex New Zealand passes a rural parcel to NZ Post, Peek follows it there ("Delivery with NZ Post"). A parcel posted abroad isn't switched over to NZ Post; Peek follows it through the sending post and tracking services.
Questions about NZ Post tracking
How long is an NZ Post tracking number?
13 characters for a postal number (RR123456785NZ) and 20 digits for most courier parcels. Some courier labels carry 24 characters ending in NZ.
Does NZ Post deliver on Saturdays?
Only when the sender adds Saturday delivery to a Courier or Express parcel. It isn't available for rural (RD) addresses.

No. NZ Post can't trace a parcel by your name, address or phone number, so ask the sender for the number.
