How to change a delivery address, before or after shipping

8 min read

Before your order ships, change the address with the shop: Amazon lets you edit it until the order enters dispatch, and on eBay you ask the seller to cancel so you can buy again. Once it has shipped, ask the carrier: with your tracking number you can usually pick a neighbour, a safe place, a pickup point or another day. A new street address is often off the table, because the sender decides what you may change. Once the parcel is out for delivery, it's usually too late.

Can I change the delivery address after ordering on Amazon?

Usually, until the order is packed or dispatched.

ShopHow to change the addressUntil when
Amazon (shipped by Amazon)Your Orders → Order Details → Change next to the addressUntil the order "enters the shipping process"
Amazon (other sellers)UK: edit in Your Orders within 30 minutes of ordering, then Contact seller. US: contact the sellerBefore it ships. If the seller can't, cancel and order again before it ships
eBaySellers "generally can't change" it. Ask the seller to cancel, then buy again with the right addressBefore the seller sends it
TemuYour orders → the order → Edit next to the addressBefore it is packed or shipped: check the order page
VintedTell the seller, cancel together, fix your address, buy againBefore the seller sends it

Amazon.com won't change the address from a phone: use the desktop site.

Can you change the delivery address after it has shipped?

Sometimes, through the carrier rather than the shop. Amazon says so: once an order has shipped, "contact the carrier directly". The sender is the carrier's customer, though, so the sender chooses which changes you may make. FedEx warns that "some shippers may restrict certain delivery options", and Evri says its options "will depend on the sender's chosen delivery service".

  1. OrderedThe shop can still change the address
  2. Packed and dispatchedThe shop's edit button disappears
  3. In transitThe carrier's options, from your tracking number
  4. Out for deliveryUsually too late to change anything
  1. Get the tracking numberFrom the shop's shipping email or your order page.
  2. Open the carrier's trackingEnter the number, often with your postcode or ZIP code, or use the link in the carrier's email or text.
  3. Pick an optionWhatever the sender allows: a neighbour, a safe place, a pickup point, another day.
  4. Check the price, then confirmSome changes cost money and some can't be undone.

Can't find the number, or need one of the free carrier accounts some changes require? Find your tracking number covers both.

How to change the delivery address with UPS, Royal Mail, An Post and others

What each carrier lets you change, and what it costs:

A few catches:

  • USPS: Delivery Instructions need a USPS.com account, show under the tracking status only for eligible items, and are final once submitted.
  • UPS: without an account, Change My Delivery on the tracking page emails you a one-time passcode. UPS may add transport charges.
  • FedEx: fees depend on location, so check the total before you confirm.
  • Australia Post: redirects only if the sender passed on your email, mobile number or other details matching your MyPost account.

At Canada Post, redirecting a parcel is a business service for senders ($13 plus shipping). USPS Package Intercept ($19.45) and UPS Delivery Intercept are sender tools too: if the shop agrees to call a parcel back, see returned to sender.

Can I reschedule the delivery day?

Often, and more easily than the address. UPS charges $9.99 per parcel on My Choice Basic. Royal Mail, DPD UK and DPD Ireland let you pick another date online. FedEx sells a 5 to 8 p.m. slot on the planned day for $5.55, or a 2-hour window up to 7 days after the original date for $11.50.

Going away? USPS Hold Mail keeps everything at your Post Office for 3 to 30 days, and FedEx Delivery Manager has a free vacation hold of up to 14 days.

Has the driver already left a card? You're rebooking, not redirecting: see what to do after a missed delivery.

Why can't I change my delivery address?

A missing or greyed-out option usually means one of these:

  • The sender switched them off. Australia Post says so: "the sender has opted out of allowing redirect requests".
  • It's out for delivery. USPS, Canada Post and Australia Post ("onboard for delivery") stop there. Evri lets you divert "up until the courier reaches your doorstep".
  • It needs a signature or ID. USPS excludes items needing a delivery signature, Royal Mail Special Delivery has no Safeplace or neighbour, and Canada Post's preference skips signature and proof-of-age parcels.
  • Cash or duty is due. USPS excludes Collect on Delivery, and in Canada a parcel with duty and taxes owed goes to the post office.
  • It's international or headed far away. USPS Delivery Instructions don't cover international mail, and Royal Mail changes the address only after a missed delivery, within the same postcode district (SE21, not SE22).
  • The carrier doesn't do new addresses. Evri and DPD UK send you back to the sender.

If nothing works, ask someone at the original address to take it in, or collect it from the pickup point. Left uncollected, it eventually goes back to the shop: what happens to an uncollected parcel.

Moving house: does mail forwarding cover parcels?

Don't count on it. Some posts don't forward even their own parcels, and most exclude other couriers, so tell every shop your new address.

Quick answers

Do I need UPS My Choice Premium to change the address?

No. Free Basic members pay per parcel ($14.99 to another address in the US); Premium ($19.99 a year) includes it.

Can I redirect a parcel to a parcel locker?

Often, if the carrier has lockers and the sender allows it: Evri where available, An Post (free, chosen by text), Australia Post through MyPost, or a UPS Access Point ($5.99 on My Choice Basic).

How do I stop this happening next time?

Check the address before you pay, or choose a pickup point or locker at checkout. Give the shop your email and mobile number: An Post and Australia Post need them to offer you options, and DPD Ireland to send its notices. Turn on notifications in Peek or the carrier's app, so you can act before the parcel is out for delivery.

Standing preferences help: a Royal Mail Safeplace, Evri's MyPlaces, or a UPS My Choice Access Point preference, which sends every parcel to an Access Point at no charge.
